Weight management
When it's not about eating less
Weight Loss and Weight Management
You have tried restricting calories. You have tried cutting carbohydrates, or fat, or both. You exercise. And the weight will not shift, or it comes back as soon as you stop. This is not a willpower problem. It is a physiology problem.
Mark Webster's approach to weight management starts with finding out why the weight is there in the first place.
Why weight loss is often more complex than 'eat less, move more'
The conventional model of weight management, reducing caloric intake and increasing energy expenditure, works in straightforward cases. But a significant proportion of people who struggle with their weight have an underlying metabolic, hormonal, or gut health driver that makes standard approaches ineffective.
Common underlying causes that Mark investigates include insulin resistance and blood sugar dysregulation, thyroid underfunction (including subclinical cases), hormonal imbalance (particularly oestrogen, cortisol, and testosterone), gut microbiome disruption affecting calorie extraction and fat storage, inflammation driven by diet, gut, or autoimmune processes, and nutritional deficiencies that affect metabolic function.
What Mark will assess
Mark takes a detailed metabolic, dietary, and hormonal history. He will review any relevant blood tests you have and, where gaps exist, recommend additional testing to build a complete picture. He will assess your diet in detail, not to count calories, but to understand the quality, timing, and composition of what you eat and how it affects your metabolic response.
He will look at your gut health, hormonal status, thyroid function, stress levels, sleep quality, and medication history, as several common medications contribute to weight gain as a side effect.
The integrative approach to weight management
Mark does not prescribe a generic eating plan. He builds a personalised approach based on your specific metabolic and hormonal profile. This may include dietary adjustments targeting your particular insulin and blood sugar pattern, supplement support to address deficiencies affecting metabolism, gut health interventions to improve the microbiome environment, strategies to reduce inflammatory load, and, where appropriate, collaboration with your GP on any medical factors.
A realistic expectation
Metabolic and hormonal weight issues take time to resolve. If the underlying cause has been present for years, addressing it will produce gradual, sustainable change rather than rapid loss. Mark's goal is a body weight that is natural and maintainable for your physiology, not a short-term result achieved through restriction.
