Skin Conditions
When what's on the surface starts underneath
Chronic Skin Conditions
YYou have tried the creams, the gels, the elimination diets, the prescription treatments. Some have helped temporarily. None have resolved the problem permanently. That is because most chronic skin conditions are not primarily a skin problem.
Mark Webster knows this first-hand. He suffered from severe eczema and asthma as a child and through his adult life, until he identified that gluten was the driver. His own experience shaped a clinical approach to skin conditions that looks well beneath the surface.
Why chronic skin conditions have internal causes
The skin is the body's largest organ and one of its primary elimination pathways. Chronic skin conditions, particularly eczema, psoriasis, acne, and rosacea, are almost always associated with internal disruption. The most common drivers include gut dysbiosis and intestinal permeability (leaky gut), food sensitivities and intolerances, nutritional deficiencies, particularly zinc, vitamin A, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin D, hormonal imbalance, autoimmune activity, and chronic inflammation driven by diet, stress, or environmental triggers.
Topical treatments suppress the surface expression of these internal processes. They rarely resolve them.
Conditions Mark works with:
Eczema and atopic dermatitis
Psoriasis
Acne (including hormonal and cystic acne)
Rosacea
Chronic fungal skin infections
Chronic hives (urticaria)
Contact dermatitis with a systemic component
Skin conditions associated with food intolerances or gut dysfunction
What Mark will assess:
Mark takes a detailed history of your skin condition, including when it started, what triggers or worsens it, what treatments you have tried, your diet, your gut health, your stress levels, and your family history.
He has a particular interest in the gut-skin axis, the well-established relationship between gut microbiome health, intestinal permeability, and skin inflammation. For many patients with chronic skin conditions, addressing gut health is the most effective route to skin improvement.
He will also assess nutritional status, as deficiencies in zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, and vitamin A are directly associated with impaired skin barrier function and chronic inflammation.
Mark's personal experience
Mark's own eczema and asthma were severe throughout his childhood and early adult life. After removing gluten from his diet in his 40s, both conditions cleared within a few months. That experience, combined with 20 years of clinical practice, gives him a perspective on chronic skin conditions that goes beyond the textbook.
He does not promise rapid results. Chronic skin conditions with long-standing internal drivers take time to resolve. But he does promise a thorough investigation of what is actually causing the problem, and a plan to address it.
Your Next Step:
Chronic skin conditions respond well to integrative treatment once the internal drivers are identified. Consultations are available in-person at the Stay Well Clinic in Hornby, Christchurch, or via Zoom from anywhere in New Zealand.
